Prince of Wales Weekly Update

October 10, 2026

This week many classes explored seasonal change with buddy fall walks, sit spots and time exploring the great outdoors. It was a lovely week to be outside. The student tree planting day was a huge success! The kids absolutely loved it, and it was wonderful to see their excitement and enthusiasm throughout the day.

The entire student body took part in planting the trees. The students and staff were fully on board, and it was such a positive experience for everyone involved. It was especially rewarding to see how excited the students were to get their hands in the soil and feel that they were contributing to something that will continue to grow for years to come. Students could be seen at recess visiting their tree instead of playing on the playground. Some even brought water to water and sang to their trees. I really believe that school yard greening projects have an incredible lasting impact and the connection with nature the students are developing from this experience will positively impact our planet.

The learning has already continued beyond the planting day. Teachers have been outside with their classes, having students journal about the experience and draw pictures of their class tree. The music teacher is teaching a song about tree planting. I can’t wait to see how this hands-on learning continues to grow with the students and how watching their trees develop will help them make connections to nature, responsibility, and their own growth.

I would like to extend a very special thank you to Marcia Birkigt who has dedicated hundreds of hours to make this project a reality. Also, to the many parents who volunteered and dug holes for hours. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity Green Cities Foundation has given us by supporting our project by giving our students such a meaningful, hands-on learning experience. It was truly a memorable day for our whole school community, and I’m excited to see how the trees and the students’ learning continue to grow!
